The Harvard Center Shanghai organized a talk and reception with HBS Professor Willy C. Shih on April 27, 2015. Professor Shih delivered a presentation on “Five Technology Changes That Should Affect Your Strategy”.

We are all familiar with the changes that have been brought to us by the dramatic gains in computing and communications. But these gains have also resulted in profound changes to the way products and services are designed, implemented, and delivered.  These changes – the migration of functionality from hardware to software, the increasing level of abstraction, increased scale requirements for developing bleeding edge technologies, data-driven product enhancement, and growth of the tradable sector – have significant implications for incumbent firms whose existing capabilities may be made obsolete.  For new entrants or firms that can adapt, there are tremendous opportunities.  In the presentation, Professor Shih gave participants an understanding of both what is enabling as well as what is motivating these changes.

Professor Shih is the Robert and Jane Cizik Professor of Management Practice in Business Administration.  An expert in manufacturing and product development, he has written or co-authored more than 125 cases and teaching materials in industries ranging from semiconductors, information technology, consumer electronics, aerospace, transportation equipment, manufacturing processes and tools, and intellectual property.  His paper, “Restoring American Competitiveness”, co-authored with Gary Pisano, won the 2009 McKinsey Award.  And his recent book, “Producing Prosperity – Why America Needs a Manufacturing Renaissance”, co-authored with Gary Pisano, has called attention to the link between manufacturing and innovation.
