Forum on Humanities for General Education

Date:

Thu - Fri, Jan 16 to Jan 17, 9:45am - 12:30pm

Location:

Harvard Center Shanghai

This was a joint project between Harvard faculty and HKUST faculty who share a common concern in further enhancement of humanities general education for non-humanities undergraduates, taking into account the experiences of both institutions and beyond. The project supported two workshops, one held at Harvard in January 2013 and the second at HKUST in January 2014 respectively. A forum open to participants from the world of academia in Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan was organized in Shanghai after the second workshop in Hong Kong in January 2014. The outcome of the project included a collection of reflective pedagogical essays derived from the educational experiences of faculty and students from both institutions regarding humanities for non-humanities undergraduates, together with other writings on broader theoretical underpinnings of humanities education in the age of educational globalization. The project also served as a starting point to prepare for future funding opportunities to sustain support for the enhancement of humanities general education at the college level.
